''Orawa'' for chamber string orchestra by Wojciech Kilar has become something of a glorification of the highlanders' dance. The folklore of the highlanders, an inexhaustible source of inspiration for many of the beautiful of Polish compositions ever since Karol Szymanowski's time, occupies a key position in Kilar's music. (''Krzesany'', ''Hoary Fog'', ''Choralvorspiel'') alongside an equally important, though quite different aspect of his music, namely his film music. Once a representative of the Polish avant-garde, Kilar has become an advocate of good but ageless music. ''Orawa'' (1986), written for a chamber string orchestra, vividly represents the vigour and spontaneity of highlander band performances. In a way the orchestra acts as multiplication of the original folk band, consisting of two violins and brass. The intensity with which this impressive music unfolds testifies to the composer's great passion for the Tatra Mountains - though Kilar himself protests that in the Tatra he is but a mere tourist.
