In 1914, Mykola Leontovich wrote "Shchedrik" (bounty,generosity) based on an ancient Ukrainian folk chant sung in his time by carolers during Christmas. His words, though, reflect the pagan tradition, of anticipating the eventual coming of Spring. In 1936, the American choral conductor Peter Wilhousky wrote English words to the tune, which relate to Western Christmas traditions, under the title, "Carol of the Bells."
