Johann Georg Heinrich Backofen was born in Durlach (Karlsruhe, Germany) on July 6th, 1768. He was known not only as a composer for, and virtuoso of, the clarinet, but also played the harp, flute, and basset horn. Backofen died on July 10th, 1830 (though the exact year is uncertain; some documents give 1839).
