Nikolai Medtner was born in Moscow on Christmas Eve, 1879 (that is according to the Julian calendar then in use in Russia; acccording to the Gregorian calendar, his birthday would have been January 5th, 1880). He composed a substantial number of works, all involving the piano, including piano sonatas, violin sonatas, 108 songs, the present piano quintet, and three piano concerti. Medtner died in Golders Green, London, on November 13th, 1951, and is buried in Hendon Cemetery (London).
