This miniature may be Mahler's most famous due to its use in the Visconti film "Death in Venice." The melody (possibly a love song to his wife, Alma) is characterized by sighing motive and long suspensions which are stretched to their breaking point before they resolve. (The combination of brass and harp is amazing!)

Instrumentation:Brass Quintet (opt. Harp)
