Lew Soloff passed away on March 15, 2015. I was shocked. Lew was a lifelong friend. We met when he was in grade school and I was in junior high. Our lives ran parallel in many ways, growing up in Lakewood New Jersey. I used to play trumpet and we were in the New Jersey All-State Band together. We remained close friends, often working together early in our careers, until he veered off into his incredible jazz career, and Berry Gordy brought me out to Los Angeles as a Motown recording artist.
Two months after he passed away I sat at the piano, and channeled Lew Soloff, in what is almost an instant composition". The result was a solo piano piece entitled A Trumpeter's Remembrance, for Lew Soloff, which is a reflection of our parallel lives and the closeness we maintained until he left us. I soon began to get requests from trumpet players for an arrangement of this piece for trumpet and piano, and quickly complied. For me this composition constitutes my last collaboration with a lifelong friend.
