Ada sketches by Emily Howard is a short dramatic scena for mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble that imagines an inner world of mathematician Ada Lovelace. The work is concerned with creative processes with Lovelace (mezzo) experiencing a number of different creative discoveries as she explores a mathematical equation as solved by Charles Babbage's hypothetical 1842 Analytical Engine, a prototype for the world's first computer. As she works, a musical solution to the equation gains a life of its own, causing Lovelace to contemplate her own position in history. The text was written by Professor Laura Tunbridge. Ada sketches was first performed on May 12, 2011 as part of Soundings X, at the Austrian Cultural Forum, London. This product is Printed on Demand and may take several weeks to fulfill.
