La Cenerentola (Cinderella) is based on the fairy tale Cendrillon by Charles Perrault. Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) composed La Cenerentola at age 25 following the success of his opera The Barber of Seville. Rossiniâs Cinderella follows the traditional fairy tale with a few variations: the wicked stepmother is replaced with a stepfather, Don Magnifico, the Fairy Godmother is replaced with a philosopher and tutor to the prince, Alidoro, and Cinderella is identified by a bracelet instead of a glass slipper. La Cenerentola premiered on January 25, 1817 at the Teatro Valle in Rome and today is considered a staple of the standard repertoire.
