Built on an ostinato, the canonic writing of this inspired work makes the anthem accessible to all. The ostinato figure in the bass and alto voices is a plea to the Holy Spirit to come to those in need; the refrain may be sung in English or Latin. Over this, the sopranos and tenors weave their solemn petition. An optional C-instrument (flute, violin, oboe, or recorder) mixes with the voices to complete the whole.
