DAS PARADIES UND DIE PERI (PARADISE AND THE PERI), Op. 50, is a secular oratorio by Robert Schumann (1810-1856). It is based on a German translation of a story from LALLA-ROOKH, an 1817 collection of four chivalric romances by Thomas Moore. The tale, divided into two parts depicts a supernatural winged creature from Persian folklore, called a peri, who tries to regain entry into Paradise after having been expelled. Completed in 1843, the work premiered in Leipzig on December 4, 1843 under the direction of the composer. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc (2-3).
