This challenging yet popular duo for violin and cello was composed at the start of World War 1 (1914), but not played in public until a full decade later in Salzburg as part of the 1924 ISCM Festival. Its three movements are traditionally arranged as Allegro, Adagio, and Maestoso/Presto, incorporating rhapsodic folk-music gestures within a captivating and exhilarating duet.
