Written between October 1809 and June 1810, Ludwig van Beethoven's (1770-1827) Egmont, Op. 84 is a set of ten incidental music pieces for the 1787 play of the same name by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The work premiered on June 15th, 1810. Egmont tells the story of the heroic Count Egmont, who was condemned to death for having taken a valiant stand against oppression. The powerful and expressive overture became an unofficial anthem of the 1956 Hungarian revolution and remains very popular to this day.
