In ancient Japan, the shogun were the military commanders appointed by the emperor. Grand and regal, when a shogun appeared to the public, there was a sense of awe and power at this warrior leader. Flanked by armies of samurai warriors, their power was obvious and their respect was demanded. Entrance of the Shogun by David Marlatt is a clever piece that uses only the 5 notes used in a pentatonic scale (like playing just the black keys on the piano). This gives it a true Asian sonority.(1:45)
