The last opera composed by Delibes was the lush and dazzling Lakmâ (1883). This arrangement has been crafted for string orchestra without singers. The opera took the audience to India, occupied at the time by the British. The three act opera is best known for Bell Song, a coloratura showpiece, and Flower Duet, a barcarolle. A British Airways commercial in the 1990s made the latter familiar to non-opera-goers.
