Ha-no (Elegy), for flute & piano was commissioned by the James Pappoutsakis Memorial fund for the 21st annual Pappoutsakis Flute Competition in Boston on February, 2001. "Ha-no" is a word; without meaning used in songs for a chief from the Tsimshian people. The slower section is based on a lullaby from the Kwakiutl people, also from the Pacific Northwest.
