How Firm a Foundation is an exciting setting of this traditional American melody first found in Joseph Funk's "Genuine Church Music," 1832. In most modern hymnals it is known as the tune "Foundation," but it is found in "The Sacred Harp" under the tune "Bellevue." This setting for 3-5 octaves handbell choir has a primitive sound, particularly in the accompaniment. This is in keeping with the singing "performance practice" of the Sacred Harp Singing Conventions.
