Hal Hopson has taken the traditional African-American spiritual and created a stunning choral setting that calls for optional congregational participation. All voices sing the first verse of this inspired tune in unison, and a quick key change leads to the second verse sung by a soloist. The third verse opens to rich, four-part harmony, after which the first verse is repeated, this time with an idiomatic descant soaring over the melody sung by choir and congregation. The anthem closes with the last phrase freely executed by the solo voice. A truly moving work, suitable for Lent or general use.
