Debussy's 10th Prelude for solo piano is the beloved Sunken Cathedral (recorded in 1930 by Stokowski as The Engulfed Cathedral). In this allusory impressionistic work, Debussy recalls the ancient myth of a cathedral submerged below the sea which rises on occasion. Debussy depicts a resounding organ in fortissimo chords, as the cathedral emerges from the water, and Thorne re-imagines this setting for clarinet choir. Thorne neatly replicates the technical demands on the pianist, although the range is slightly reduced to accommodate the clarinets. Also available for saxophone octet (SM-S167F).
