A grand Maestoso section featuring a passage for full ensemble begins this piece, where the principal motive for the composition is presented as an ascending figure in the first measure. A transition that utilizes the motive in a quieter, less dense setting is followed by a lyrical Allegretto section, revealing a theme whose opening pitches are taken from the principal motive. A transition (Andante) quickly builds tension and leads to a furious Vivace section, featuring changing meters, rapid scale work, and development of the principal motive. The development climaxes with a return to the opening material (Maestoso) followed by a dramatic tutti conclusion. Ideal for contests.
