Leroy Anderson (1908-1975) wrote LULLABY OF THE DRUM in 1970 as part of a series of works he wrote for beginning orchestra. Following the work's premiere on December 5, 1970, by the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra (conducted by the composer), Anderson withdrew the composition. Following his death, Anderson's family decided to publish this work that features the percussion section - snare drums, timpani, bongos, and marimba/xylophone - in a slow march. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2.2.2: 4.3.3.1: Timp.Perc(3-4): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).
