The joyous outer movements, Song of the Laughing Green Woods and Piping Down the Valley's Wild, inspired by William Blake's Songs of Innocence, show the influence of the early twentieth century English tradition. The gentler, more reflective middle movement, Softer Falls Than Petals, is inspired by Alfred Tennyson's There is Sweet Music Here.
