Joseph Drechsler (born May 26, 1782 in Wällischbirken/Bohemia, died February 27,1852 in Vienna) received his training in Passau and Prague. He went to Vienna in 1807, where he worked as a piano teacher, coach, and choir master and from 1844 on as cathedral music master of St. Stephan's cathedral. In addition to this, he was also musical director and later composer for the Theater in der Josephstadt. His work as a teacher culminated in the organ and figured bass for trainee teachers, and his students included no less a figure than Johann Strauß. Drechsler's oeuvre includes masses and other religious music, operas and "Singspiele", Lieder and choral pieces as well as instrumental music such as piano sonatas and string quartets.
