Leos JanĦcek's (1854-1928) STRING QUARTET NO. 2 "INTIMATE LETTERS" was written in 1928. It was the second quartet the Bohemian Quartet had commissioned from JanĦcek. It was inspired by his long friendship with Kamila StĥsslovĦ, a married woman 38 years his junior with whom he exchanged more than 700 letters. It has been referred to as JanĦcek's "manifesto on love". It was not only dedicated to StĥsslovĦ, but the composer also stipulated in his will that she would receive all royalties. The work premiered a month before JanĦcek died on September 11, 1928 by the Moravian Quartet. Reprint edition.
