Although Franz Schubert was primarily known for his art songs, as well as his piano and chamber works, he also composed many symphonies and other large forms. The overture to Rosamunde is a stylistically traditional and harmonically rich, large symphonic work that was composed to precede a musical play. Mostly tutti, it translates extremely well to the symphonic band idiom. This adaptation has been abridged due to the length of the original, yet it retains all of the important themes.
