Three Dance Preludes is one of an impressive list of commissions by master saxophonist John Sampen, who premiered the piece at the 1982 World Saxophone Congress with pianist Marilyn Shrude. The three preludes pay homage to jazz greats Charlie Parker, Lee Konitz, and Jimmy Dorsey, and are to be performed with a sound style that emulates each. Hodkinson also points out that the piano "is neither accompanimental nor secondary in any sense," but a full partner in the duet. For advanced performers. Dur.: 13'
