Alfred Oelschlegel was born in Anscha (Bohemia, now Czech Republic) on 25 February 1847. He was a student at the Prague organ school, and worked as a theater conductor among others in Hamburg, Würzburg and Vienna. After that, he was an Austrian military bandmaster and conductor of spa orchestras. He died in Leipzig on 19 June 1915. "To the Madonna" is a haunting, quite challenging performance piece. The distinctive combination of violin, cello and harp gives the composition its appeal.
