The Toccata true to its title has been written in the traditional spirit, that is, as music driven relentlessly by the force of momentum; it is full of tension and expectation, virtuosity, and builds to an exhilarating climax. Unusually here it is followed by an Elegie, which eases gently out of the emotional heights of the Toccata, only to deliver us once more into a deep musical experience.
