Using an ostinato bass and open, modal harmonies, Hopson has created a simple, yet highly effective setting of the Billings canon. The work opens with an optional solo or ensemble statement of the theme, then voices break into a 3-part version of the canon. Sopranos state the theme again with harmonic support from the lower voices, and the piece ends with an unaccompanied final statement from the soloist. A highly effective setting for Lent or Holy Week.
