LAMENT was originally composed for solo piano in memory of Judith Arron, whose visionary goals for Carnegie Hall were matched by her abilities to achieve them. Zwilich later adapted this plaintive work for cello and piano, and then for string bass and piano. In his mission to record lyrical music for baritone saxophone, Adam Estes has transcribed Zwilich’s cello version, providing one version using altissimo to preserve the cello’s broad range, along with a second option taking full advantage of the saxophone’s standard range only. The latter version is within reach of students, whether taken on bari or alto. Both parts are provided with the publication.
