John Loeillet (of London), born Jean Baptiste Loeillet in Ghent, baptised November 18, 1680, died July 19, 1730 in London. He was a Belgian composer and oboe and flute player; often, he gets confused with his cousin Jean Baptiste Loeillet (Loeillet de Gant). In 1705 he moved to London. His name sometimes appeared as "Lullie" or "Lully". He himself anglicised his first name to "John". In 1707 he was among the members of the Drury Lane Orchestra; one or two years later, he played first oboe and flute at the Queens Theatre, Haymarket. At his home he organized weekly concerts, where the Corelli Concerti grossi op.6 were given their first performances in England. Loeillet was not only an oboist and flautist, but also a well known harpsichord player and teacher. Furthermore he is said to have done a lot for the introduction of the traverse flute in England. He wrote Sonatas for recorder, flute, oboe and Bc, Trio Sonatas for 2 flutes, 2 violins, oboe and recorder and Bc, as well as Lessons and Suites for harpsichord.
