Heller, who spent most of his life in Paris in loneliness and poverty, lived almost entirely for music, in a poetic world of his own imagination. He may be looked on as a great small composer. Of over 160 opus numbers for the piano, some containing over 2 0 pieces, very little of Heller's work lacks musical interest. His studies were the first to be written for musical purposes – phrasing, colour and rhythm – and they are undoubted masterpieces of freshness and charm.
