Francois Devienne was born in Joinville (Haute-Marne, France) on January 31st, 1759. He was active in Paris as flautist, bassoonist, and composer, and played bassoon at the Paris Opera. In addition, he was a member of the Military Band of the French Guard, where he held the rank of sergeant and was in charge of teaching the children of his colleagues in the band in its Free School of Music. After the Revolutionary period this school became the National Institute of Music, and was later chartered as the Paris Conservatory. In 1795 Devienne was appointed an administrator and flute professor there. His works include 12 operas, as well as approximately 300 instrumental compositions, including a dozen flute concerti, sinfonias for woodwinds, quartets and trios for various instruments, four bassoon concerti, and six bassoon sonatas. Francois Devienne died in a sanatorium in Charenton near Paris on September 5th, 1803 (possibly of overwork).
