These three pieces from Biagio Marinis Opus 1, his Ajfetti Musicali.... Nella quale published in Venice in 1617.
The three pieces have differing approaches to the bass part. In La Orlandina it is marked sepiace (optional), and is definitely subservient to the canto, while in La Ponte the two parts are more or less equal. In La Gardane there is no separate bass part, and the continue has a purely accompanying role: we have included it in the separate printed part in case a second chordal instrument is required (e.g. lute or chitarrone), but would not recommend the use of a bowed instrument.
Biagio Marini was bom in Brescia in 1587, and died in Venice in 1663. In 1615 he was a violinist at St. Marks Venice, under Claudio Monteverdi, but he evidently had a restless nature, as in 1620 he was back in Brescia, and thereafter he turned up not only in Italian cities such as Parma, Padua, Milan, Ferrara and
