Little is known of Biumi other than he was born around 1570 and worked as an organist in Milan. These particular pieces are unusual in the way they cross the bridge between dance music and free instrumental music, particularly given that their starting point is the corrente, rather than the gagliarda, stylized examples of which are common in early 17th century source. These harmonically more interesting than much northern Italian stylized dance music of the period.
