Carl (sometimes Karl) Czerny was born in Vienna, Austria, on February 21st, 1791. He was extremely prolific, having composed symphonies, concerti, sonatas, string quartets, masses, and requiems. Today he is remembered primarily for the great number of didactic piano pieces he wrote. In this regard, he was a extremely successful and much sought-after teacher, even counting Franz Liszt among his pupils (Liszt not only dedicated his Transcendental Etudes to Czerny -- who had been the first to use the word "Etude" as a title -- but also involved him in the collaborative work, Hexameron .. Czerny contributed the fifth variation. Carl Czerny died in Vienna, on July 15th, 1857.
