The pavan is a slow, stately court dance in duple meter, popular throughout Europe; frequently the pavan was used as the first dance in a set of dances.The branle is a lively old dance in 4/4 time. Usually a country dance, popular in the Renaissance. The branle was danced by a group of many couples, some danced in a line and some in a circle.
