The influence exerted at the end of the 16th century by Italian art on the whole of the western world, especially on Germany, is shown in an exemplary manner by the present issue. The light dance song, which was known by the names villanelle, napolitana and balletto, had an overwhelming success and was comparable, as far as its contents and popularity are concerned, with our modern dance music numbers.
The seven ballets by Gastoldi (15561622) are taken from an original Venetian impression. In conception these pieces are purely instrumental
