These songs are nicely varied, ranging from very simple settings of popular melodies to some elegant contrapuntal pieces.They are taken from MS Add. 35087 of the British Library, aThey are mostly written in a transitional style that is midway between that of the rondeaux of the 15th century and the Parisian chansons of the 1520s. In some cases popular songs may be involved: in no. 4 the tenor part, which clearly has the main melody, is very probably based on a popular tune, though other surviving settingsof the same text use a different melody; no. 6 may also be another such piece.
