Carl Heinrich Carsten Reinecke was born in Altona (then part of Demark, now part of the German city state of Hamburg) on June 23rd, 1824. He began composing at the age of seven, and made his first public appearance as a pianist when he was twelve years old. During his lifetime he also enjoyed a career as a conductor (as director of the Gewandhaus Orchestra he conducted the 1869 premiere performance of Brahms' German Requiem), and was an influential teacher (Edvard Grieg, Christian Sinding, Leos Janacek, Isaac Albeniz, Johan Swendsen, and Max Bruch were among his students). Reinecke died in Leipzig, Germany, on March 10th, 1910.
