This selection offers recorder players a tantalizing foretaste of variation sets by masters of the form. To perform variations is perhaps one of the most enjoyable tasks a performing artist can have. He can follow the various stages of composers ingenuity and playfulness, exhibit his virtuosity and display his musical sensitivity.
It should be remembered that in the Baroque era these works were always performed in an improvisational manner. As a result, modern-day players also have the option to omit—depending on the inspiration of the moment—some of the variations included here or to add ones of their own.
It offers a serious challenge: how to take the short variated sections and turn them into a homogeneous whole through tempo and character relationships.
The editor wishes recorder players much success in studying and performing the pieces.
