This Christmas motet is from Byrds publication of music for the Roman Catholic liturgy, first printed in 1607 and subsequently republished in 1610. The piece was intended to be performed as part of a religious service, but in a ‘stand-alone’ performance a more satisfactory musical result will be obtained by using the prima pars as a da capo. The present edition includes parts suitable for voices, viols and recorders.
