Luigi Cherubini. Ed. Pietro Spada.
THE "CHANT SUR LA MORT DE JOSEPH HAYDN" FOR 3 SOLOSITS AND ORCHESTRA ON A TEXT BY "MR. ST. VICTOR" WAS COMPOSED BY CHERUBINI IN DECEMBER 1805 AS THE NEWS SPREAD THROUGH PARIS OF THE DEATHER OF THE AUSTRIAN COMPOSER. THE "COMITE DU CONCERT DES AMATEURS" COMMISSIONED THE WORK FROM THE FLORENTINE COMPOSER AND ORGANIZED A COMMEMORATIVE CONCERTO AT THE "SALLE OLYMPIQUE, RUD DE LA VICTOIRE". THE NEWS OF HAYDN'S DEATH WAS LATER DENIED AND THE PIECE WAS NO LONGER PERFORMED. CHERUBINI HIMSELF, IN THE NOTES PRECEDING THE SCORE, EXPRESSES THE DESIRE THAT THE COMPOSITION SHOUD NOT BE PERFORMED IN PUBLIC FOR A LONG TIME THEREAFTER. HE DID NOT REGRET THE WORK DONE AND THE PIECE WAS LATER PUBLISHED IN A REDUCED FORM FOR VOICE AND PIANO IN PARIS IN 1809 (CHANT SUR LA MORT DE JOSEPH HAYDN, A TROIS VOIX AVEC ACCOMPAGMENTS, DEDIE A SON A.S. LE PRINCE NICOLAS ESTERHAZY DE PALANTHA PAR L. CHERUBINI, PARIS, MAGASIN DE MUSIQUE). THE PRESENT EDITION OF THE SCORE, THE FIRST, IS BASED ON THE ORIGINAL AUTOGRAPH CONSERVED AT THE DEUTSCHE STAATSBIBLIOTHEK IN BERLIN - PIETRO SPADA, ROME, 1980 (TRANSLATED BY IAN McGILVRAY)
