Johann Michael Haydn (brother of Joseph) was born in Rohrau, Austria, on September 14th, 1737. He began his musical career as a boy soprano in the choir of Saint Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna. Shortly after leaving the choir-school, he was appointed Kapellmeister at Nagyvarad, and later (in 1762) at Salzburg (a position he held for forty-three years, during which time he composed 360 works for the church, as well as much instrumental music).
