Peter von Winter (baptized on August 28th, 1754 in Mannheim, Germany) was known mainly as a composer of opera. He studied with Antonio Salieri in Vienna, and moved to Munich in 1778, becoming director of the court theatre; this was when he began to write works for the stage. In 1787 he became Vice-Kapellmeister in Munich, and Kapellmeister in 1798, which position he held until his death on October 17th, 1825.
