Jacques Pierre Joseph Rode was born in Bordeaux, Acquitaine, on February 16, 1774). At the age of 13 he became a pupil of Giovanni Battista Viotti, who was so impressed with him that he charged nothing for the lessons. Rode served as violin soloist for Napoleon I and toured extensively in the Netherlands, Germany, England, and Spain, later spending a great deal of time in Moscow. Beethoven wrote his last violin sonata (Opus 96) for him when Rode was visiting Vienna. Rode died on November 25, 1830, at Chateau de Bourbon near Damazan, Lot-et-Garonne, in his native Acquitaine.
