'The Concierto de Samba is based on three different samba-rhythms from which the themes are developed: 1. The Samba Quica has a triple rhythm that exists through the contrast between 6/8 and 3/4 meter and the related attraction of syncopation. The setting is in the form of a rondo. A ballad-like theme, constantly repeated in variations, is interrupted by dynamically contrasting interludes. 2. The Samba Cubana has a slow 4/4 rhythm with ostinato syncopated beats. The principal theme contains the melodic tension of the Phrygian semi-tone step. A second theme in a major key, repeated in variations several times, forms a contrast. 3. The Samba Brasileira contains the many rhythmic figures of the fast samba. A virtuoso theme, presented by all guitars, is repeated in constantly changing degrees of the scale, the rhythmic figures are transformed into melodic phrases. Soli and piano (instrumental instruments) form a dynamically growing dialogue. The rhythmic melodic counterpoint makes it possible for the soloists to utilize many different registers in sound as well as the technical potential of the guitar.' (Klaus Wuesthoff).
