Howells was a distinguished English composer whose work, influenced to some extent by Elgar and Vaughan Williams, was largely inspired by the people and places he knew. Best known for his wide range of church music, which he composed in his middle and lat er years, he wrote little for the piano, but these two sets of pieces (1928) reflect his strong feeling for the English tradition.
