Composer, organist, conductor, and pianist Camille Saint-Saens was born in Paris, France, on October 9th, 1835. He was a prodigy, being discovered to possess perfect pitch at the age of two, learning to read and write at the age of three, composing his first little piano piece at the age of four (it is now kept in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France), peforming in his first public concert at the age of five (accompanying a Beethoven violin sonata), and even gaining mastery of some Latin by the age of seven! Today, he is known best for The Carnival of the Animals, his Second Piano Concerto, Havanaise, Third Symphony (often called the Organ Symphony), and his opera Samson and Delilah; as well as the present work. Camille Saint-Saens died of pneumonia in Algiers, Algeria, on December 16th, 1921. His body was returned to Pris, where he received a state funeral at La Madeleine (formally L'eglise Sainte-Marie-Madeleine), and interred at Cimitiere du Montparnasse in Paris.
