Pierre Jaruzzi, a composer hitherto completely unknown whose name suggests Italian descent, was probably based in Paris. Like his compatriots Carcassi, Carulli, Gragnani, Merchi, or Molino (to name but a few of the Italian guitarists working in Paris at that time) Jaruzzi had presumably been drawn to the French capital in search of better employment prospects. It is impossible, however, to ascertain whether he was a professional musician (as the confidence of his hand would certainly suggest) or rather a lover of his instrument (a "dilettante") who occasionally dabbled in composition. Pierre Jacuzzi wrote the Divertimento printed here (although it would actually be more correct to use the French term Divertissement) in or around 1810. This dating is derived both from the musical evidence and from the polacca. The latter is also included as No. 10 in Ferdinando Carulli's collection "Etrennes aux amateurs Op.40". Carulli's twelve-movement album expressly conceived for "lovers of the instrument" was published in Paris in 1810/11.
