Joseph Fiala was born in 1748. His initial career was as oboist and violoncellist. He joined the wind band of Prince Kraft Ernst at Oettingen-Wallerstein in 1774. Three years later he entered the employ of the Elector Maximilian Joseph of Bavaria in Munich, where he became a friend of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. His continuing career took him to Salzburg, to Vienna in 1785, and afterward to the Russian imperial service in Saint Petersburg. From 1792 until his death in 1816, Fiala served as Kapellmeister to Prince Fuerstenburg at Donaueschingen.
